Welcome to Miss Kuhen's Class
"A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and teaches from the heart."
Welcome Back to another fabulous school year! My name is Miss Kuhen, and it is my privilege to work alongside you this year! We will be working together to support each other as we work towards our learning goals. I would like to begin by sharing a little bit about myself. I graduated from Rowan University in 2005, with my Masters of Science in Teaching, as well as my Elementary and Special Education certification. After graduating, I moved to San Diego, California, where I spent two years co-teaching 7th and 8th grade Literacy and Social Studies. I really enjoyed my time in California, but I missed my family in NJ, so I decided to move back. In the summer of 2007, I began my journey home, traveling cross-country in my car, visiting 18 states. It was absolutely amazing! Traveling to new places is one of my favorite things to do. The following summer I spent touring Europe, visiting 17 countries in 40 days! We will be learning about many of the countries that I visited in class. During the summer of 2010, I spent two weeks in South Africa visiting the cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Victoria Falls. I believe that you can learn a lot through traveling and I look forward to sharing my stories with you throughout the year. This is my 14th year teaching at Samuel Mickle. I am proud to be a part of the S.M.S. team, and love working with all of the teachers and students. My students keep me on my toes and I learn something new from them every day! I believe that teaching is the most rewarding job in the world, and I am thankful for the opportunity to be your teacher. My family is also very important to me. I appreciate all that my parents have done for me, and look forward to spending time with them on weekends, and while vacationing in the summer. I also have a brother and sister. My brother, Scott, works in Philadelphia, and he and my sister-in-law, Erin, have two children, my nephews, Landon and Benjamin. They are absolutely adorable and I love spending time with them! My sister, Laura, works as an on-air radio personality at 92.5 XTU in Philadelphia. I grew up in Hamilton Township, NJ, but have lived in South Jersey for about 13 years. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, volunteering, fundraising, playing sports, taking pictures, and hanging out with my family and friends. Six years ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to volunteer overseas. I embarked on a 7-month volunteer journey through 4 different programs from the end of January through August. My volunteer experience included working at San Rafael Nursing Home and Day Care Center for the elderly in Cartago, Costa Rica, participating in a community village project in Cambodia, living and working at Jodie O'Shea Orphanage in Bali, Indonesia, living with my wonderful host family in Dratabu Village in Fiji while teaching Kindergarten in the morning and technology classes in the afternoon at the primary school, teaching English at Morfosi School of Language in Crete, and teaching children who have special needs at Prachadobee School in Thailand. I had an amazing experience visiting 14 countries over the course of my trip and I look forward to sharing my journey with you this year. During the 2017-2018 school year, I had the opportunity to be our District's Character Education Coordinator, in my role as a Teacher on Assignment. Our district provides a strong foundation for character education by creating a positive climate that instills core values, fosters social/emotional development, and empowers everyone involved to strive for excellence. I am grateful for the opportunity that I had to work alongside our administrators, guidance counselors, staff members, and students in both buildings to implement a curriculum that reflects the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education, the National Character Education Initiative, and East Greenwich Township School District's Strategic Plan. Everyone in our EG Family is unified and committed to helping our students become caring, respectful, and responsible citizens. Our Character Education program fosters leadership, civic education, and service learning opportunities for our students. In addition to my role in the classroom, I am also grateful to be the Lunch Club Coordinator and Student Council of Character Advisor. I love working alongside students and watching them develop into leaders within our school community. I am looking forward to working alongside each of you this year, as well as your parents and guardians. I am here to help and will do my best to make your year successful. Every one of you has the potential to be successful in whatever you choose to do! It is important to stay positive, believe in yourself, and to always try your best no matter what! Let’s make it an amazing year! “Believe in yourself and you can do anything that you put your mind to!” I BELIEVE in YOU!! ~Miss Kuhen |
