What is SMS? SMS is a program designed to provide motivation and recognition to students in fifth and sixth grade who raise their marking period grade(s) into an acceptable range and maintain or continue to raise them from one marking period to the next.
What are the goals of SMS? Teach students to establish and reach their academic goals by setting measurable goals, improving study/work habits and utilizing supports available from home and school.
How does SMS benefit students? Students are empowered to participate in their own academic success, which builds self-confidence, perseverance, and character. Students have the opportunity to participate in the SMS Club with twice weekly small group assistance with staff members. This assistance can be provided before or after school based upon the students’ needs.
What are the criteria for the SMS program? Fifth and Sixth grade students are eligible to participate in the SMS program if they have received a D or F on their report card, and they have missed three or more assignments in that course. Qualification for SMS rewards/incentives requires students to bring up one or two class grades one level without going down a grade in any other subject. Participating students must have a completed contract signed by parent, student, counselor and principal.
